Did you know…

  • The earliest reference to the tradition of blowing out birthday candles was documented in Switzerland in 1881.
  • The phrase “Happy Birthday” did not appear on birthday cakes until the American song “Happy Birthday to You” was popularized in the early 1900s.
  • According to the Guinness Book of World Records, “Happy Birthday to You” is the most recognized song in the English language. The song’s base lyrics have been translated into at least 18 languages.
  • In Germany, birthday candles are left burning the whole day. There is one candle for each year of age and one extra for good luck.
  • In North Korea, people do not celebrate birthdays on July 8 and December 17 because these were the dates of the deaths of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. More than 100,000 North Koreans celebrate displaced birthdays on July 9 or December 18 to avoid these dates.
